There was still a gale force westerly blowing after lunch when we visited Shuart in the hope that the trees and bushes there might afford us a bit of protection from the wind. Most birds seemed to be sheltering too and we only saw 2 Green Woodpeckers, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 4 Ring-necked Parakeets, 2 Sparrowhawks, 5 Red-legged Partridges, 1 Kestrel, 1 Lapwing, 1 Common Buzzard, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Goldcrest and 2 Long-tailed Tits.

March 30th
Although the sun was shining this morning there was a strong westerly wind blowing making birding unpleasant. Before meeting us at Reculver, Matt visited Shuart and saw 1 Corn Bunting, 2 Common Buzzards, 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 2 Jays, 4 Ring-necked Parakeets, 1 Chiffchaff and 3 Redwings.
We then walked from Reculver to Chamber's Wall and counted 7 Mute Swans, 10 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 10 Oystercatchers, 11 Redshank, 6 Shelduck, 2 Sanderling, 2 Grey Partridges, 4 Dunlin, 2 Turnstone, 5 Mallard, 1 Green Woodpecker, 2 Common Buzzards, 2 Jays, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 4 Tufted Duck, 2 Coot and 6 Gadwall.

On a foul, increasingly wet and windy morning we visited various sites at Reculver but did not see a great deal. Just 1 Pied Wagtail, 2 Shelduck, 1 Green Woodpecker, 5 Mute Swans, 8 Goldfinches, 2 Common Buzzards, 1 Mistle Thrush, 2 Jays, 2 Chiffchaffs, 5 Tufted Duck, 2 Mallard, 2 Coot and 1 Little Grebe.

On an uneventful morning we walked from Chamber's Wall to Codharbour and back along the Green Wall and recorded 9 Mallard, 3 Chiffchaffs, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 8 Linnets, 8 Redshank, 2 Brent Geese, 7 Oystercatchers, 7 Ringed Plovers, 15 Golden Plovers, 1 Shelduck, 2 Mute Swans and 1 Marsh Harrier.

On a bright morning with a westerly breeze blowing we walked from Chamber's Wall along the railway embankment and back by way of Coldharbour. We saw 2 Chiffchaffs, 2 White Wagtails flying W, 23 Linnets, 12 Mallard, 15 Redshank, 15 Meadow Pipits, 6 Oystercatchers, 3 Mute Swans, 16 Turnstone, 3 Ringed Plovers, 60 Golden Plovers, 4 Grey Plovers, 1 Goldfinch, 6 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 6 Gadwall, 4 Tufted Duck and 4 Coot.

After a thoroughly wet morning we arrived at Reculver after lunch and walked around the Oyster Farm. We saw 2 Mute Swans, 1 Pied Wagtail, 4 Oystercatchers, 1 Grey Plover, 1 Turnstone, 1 Wheatear, 1 Teal, 3 Great Crested Grebes, 11 Redshank, 140 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 2 Little Egrets, 13 Linnets, 4 Shelduck and 1 adult Mediterranean Gull W.

On a bright but chilly morning we visited a couple of sites at Reculver and also walked from Chamber's Wall to Coldharbour and back via the Green Wall. We saw 8 Chiffchaffs, 1 Tree Sparrow, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Little Owl, 1 Marsh Harrier, 6 Mallard, 1 Sparrowhawk, 51 Golden Plovers, 11 Sanderling, 2 Cetti's Warblers, 2 Red-legged Partridges, 3 Redshank, 12 Mute Swans, 39 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 12 Oystercatchers, 29 Grey Plovers, 3 Turnstone, 3 Snipe, 1 Greylag Goose, 1 Curlew, 4 Shelduck, 2 Long-tailed Tits, 2 Grey Partridges, 1 Green Woodpecker, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 11 Gadwall, 8 Tufted Duck, 6 Coot and 1 Common Buzzard.
It was a beautiful early spring afternoon as we walked round the Oyster Farm and recorded 3 Common Buzzards, 96 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 3 Little Egrets, 13 Redshank, 3 Shelduck, 2 Snipe, 1 Great Crested Grebe and 1 first winter Mediterranean Gull.
During Julian Perry's visit to Reculver this morning he saw 1 Common Sandpiper in the Oyster Farm. Later in the afternoon he visited Shuart where birds included 2 Common Buzzards, 3 Kestrels, 2 Ring-necked Parakeets, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 2 Green Woodpeckers, 4 Chiffchaffs, 1 Firecrest, 1 Goldcrest, 2 Greenfinches and 2 Goldfinches.
This evening Marc Heath visited Reculver and birds he saw included 1 Short-eared Owl and 2 Mediterranean Gulls.

On a miserable, rainy morning we walked around the Oyster Farm and saw 6 Goldfinches, 335 Meadow Pipits flying W, 2 Kestrels, 1 Marsh Harrier, 10 Shelduck, 1 male Merlin in off the sea, 158 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 3 Chiffchaffs, 2 Sanderling, 7 Pied Wagtails, 3 Little Egrets, 3 Corn Buntings, 2 Ringed Plovers, 2 Grey Partridges, 15 Redshank, 6 Snipe, 4 Mallard, 12 Oystercatchers, 140 Golden Plovers, 1 Grey Wagtail, 1 Sparrowhawk and 1 Grey Heron.
This afternoon Julian Perry made a brief visit to Reculver where Mark Chidwick and he had great views of a Short-eared Owl. On returning to his car 1 Avocet (121st) flew W past the Towers.
This afternoon we had a walk at Shuart and saw 2 Chiffchaffs, 1 singing Treecreper, 3 Green Woodpeckers, 1 Barn Owl, 2 Long-tailed Tits, 1 Firecrest (122nd), 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 3 Red-legged Partridges, 1 Jay, 15 Song Thrushes, 4 Redwings, 3 Lapwings, 1 Marsh Harrier, 4 Ring-necked Parakeets and 1 Kestrel.

Matt started early this morning and walked from Shuart to the sea. The first bird he saw was a singing Treecreeper after which he counted 1 Green Woodpecker 2 Common Buzzards, 13 Song Thrushes, 12 Chaffinches, 30 Starlings, 3 Chiffchaffs, 3 Marsh Harriers, 3 Grey Herons, 40 Brent Geese, 27 Mute Swans, 12 Teal, 2 Long-tailed Tits, 2 Grey Partridges, 17 Magpies, 1 Grey Wagtail, 11 Meadow Pipits, 1 Jay and 4 Ring-necked Parakeets.

He then drove over to Reculver where we met him at 0800 and then walked around the Oyster Farm lagoons. Birds we saw included 311 Brent Geese, 15 Redshank, 8 Mute Swans, 18 Golden Plovers, 8 Shelduck, 12 Linnets, 13 Snipe, 3 Little Egrets, 1 Scandinavian Rock Pipit, 1 Grey Heron, 2 Mallard, 4 Pied Wagtails, 1 Grey Wagtail, 2 Grey Partridges, the wintering Common Sandpiper, 1 Chiffchaff and 1 male Black Redstart.
This afternoon Marc Heath saw a Little Ringed Plover (120th) fly out of the Oyster Farm.

On another dull morning we walked from Chamber's Wall to Coldharbour and saw 24 Red-throated Divers, 419 Dark-bellied Brent Geese including a pale x dark-bellied hybrid, 9 Mute Swans, 1 Jay, 22 Mallard, 7 Song Thrushes, 4 Shelduck, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Grey Plover, 12 Redshank, 12 Oystercatchers, 1 Little Egret, 1 Golden Plover, 19 Chaffinches, 32 Fieldfares, 1 Redwing, 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers, 1 Common Buzzard, 6 Shoveler, 9 Tufted Duck, 11 Gadwall, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Little Grebe and 4 Coot.

This morning a blustery NNW wind was blowing showers in off the sea as we walked from Chamber's Wall to Coldharbour and then inland. We recorded 29 Cormorants, 482 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 15 Mallard, 8 Redshank, 8 Mute Swans, 2 Shoveler, 24 Oystercatchers, 2 Curlews, 8 Grey Plovers, 3 Ringed Plovers, 4 Shelduck, 11 Turnstone, 2 Green Sandpipers, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Coot, 11 Gadwall, 2 Chiffchaffs and 4 Goldfinches.

The people who had gathered at the Towers this morning to see the solar eclipse were unlucky as the murk and cloud continued to blow in off the sea all morning.
I walked from Reculver to Coldharbour and then inland and saw 422 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Wheatear, 11 Oystercatchers, 73 Cormorants, 2 Mute Swans, 18 Redshank, 2 Little Egrets, 4 Grey Plovers, 3 Shelduck, 1 Turnstone, 5 Dunlin, 2 Ringed Plovers, 1 male Snow Bunting moving W along the beach, 21 Linnets, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Green Sandpiper, 1 Grey Wagtail, 8 Gadwall, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 2 Coot, 10 Tufted Duck and 1 singing Chiffchaff.
Anne found a freshly dead Harbour Porpoise on the beach below the cliffs at Bishopstone.

With limited time this morning we arrived at a miserable and murky Reculver and walked around the area. Bird of the morning was our first Wheatear (119th), found earlier by Julian below the cliffs at the western end of the promenade. Other birds seen included 1 Pied Wagtail, 1 Black Redstart, 491 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 6 Mute Swans, 8 Cormorants, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Little Egret, 1 Barnacle Goose still with the Brent Geese and 2 Mallard.
During the day Anthea Skiffington and Bob Dewire had 9 female Eiders fly in from the E and land on the sea near Coldharbour.

There was a chilly northerly wind blowing this morning as we walked from Reculver to Coldharbour and then inland. Birds we saw included 182 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Barnacle Goose, 3 Cormorants, 9 Mute Swans, 2 Little Egrets, 15 Redshank, 11 Dunlin, 1 Pied Wagtail, 9 Shelduck, 12 Mallard, 2 Curlews, 8 Oystercatchers, 110 Golden Plovers, 3 Turnstone, 1 Grey Heron, 7 Ringed Plovers, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Common Buzzard, 1 Kestrel, 1 Green Sandpiper, 3 Shoveler, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 12 Gadwall, 1 Greylag Goose, 8 Tufted Duck and 2 Coot.
Julian Perry also saw a Black Redstart at the Towers.
During the afternoon there was a group of 16 Magpies at Bishopstone.
A Pale-bellied Brent Goose was reported during the day and Marc Heath saw 2 Short-eared Owls at the Oyster Farm this evening.

As the mist cleared we walked from Chamber's Wall to Reculver and saw 18 Meadow Pipits W, 1 Kingfisher, 13 Song Thrushes, 174 Brent Geese, 37 Cormorants, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 13 Mallard, 2 Grey Partridges, 1 Curlew, 27 Redshank, 2 Coot, 2 Snipe, 4 Oystercatchers, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 11 Ringed Plovers, 2 Turnstone, 10 Golden Plovers, 3 Little Egrets, 3 Shelduck, 2 Mute Swans, 1 adult Mediterranean Gull (118th), 1 Marsh Harrier and 1 Barnacle Goose.
A Snow Bunting was reported from Minnis Bay during the day.

Highlights of the morning were 3 Black Redstarts found at Reculver. One at the Visitors' Centre by Matt and 2 at the Oyster Farm found by Julian Perry. Unfortunately they moved through rapidly and could not be refound.
We walked from Shuart to White Post Hole and counted 8 Ring-necked Parakeets, 4 Goldfinches, 2 Green Woodpeckers, 1 Kestrel, 59 Mute Swans, 2 Stonechats, the male of which was a stunning "rubicola" bird, 3 Curlews, 37 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 55 Oystercatchers, 12 Ringed Plovers, 1 Pied Wagtail, 53 Turnstone, 2 Redshank, 157 Sanderling, 2 Dunlin, 106 Cormorants, 1 Marsh Harrier, 2 Long-tailed Tits, 1 Chiffchaff and 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker.

This afternoon we had another visit to Reculver, walking around the Towers and then inland. We saw 2 Black Redstarts, probably the 2 that Julian found this morning, 1 Rock Pipit, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Grey Heron, 8 Gadwall, 4 Shoveler, 12 Mallard, 9 Tufted Duck, 1 Chiffchaff and 1 Great Crested Grebe.

On yet another beautiful morning we walked from Chamber's Wall to Coldharbour and along the Green Wall before walking inland. We recorded 61 Cormorants, 46 Golden Plovers, 18 Corn Buntings, 2 Yellowhammers, 48 Mute Swans, 32 Mallard,  Ringed Plovers, 13 Redshank, 4 Dunlin, 1 Curlew, 26 Oystercatchers, 4 Turnstone, 2 Grey Plovers, 4 Brent Geese, 4 Bearded Tits, 2 Coot, 1 Grey Heron, 8 Magpies, 1 Chiffchaff, 12 Gadwall,  9 Tufted Duck and 1 Great Crested Grebe.
Derek Smith looked at Bishopstone this morning but could only find 4 Chiffchaffs and a Stonechat on the cliff tops.
This afternoon Helena Daly found a Black Redstart (117th) at the Oyster Farm and Charlie Vint saw a Snipe and a Chiffhaff.

We arrived at Reculver a little later than usual on another sunny morning and walked up to Coldharbour. We saw 675 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 5 Mute Swans, 2 Kestrels, 1 Pied Wagtail, 16 Redshank, 4 Shelduck, 1 Curlew, 18 Oystercatchers, 3 Lapwings, 3 Little Egrets, 180 Black-headed Gulls, 6 Ringed Plovers, 9 Cormorants, 1 Grey Heron and 1 Marsh Harrier.

March 11th
Just as we were leaving for Reculver I had a call from Julian Perry who said he had just had a Common Treecreeper (116th) fly in off the sea and over his head before landing on the Towers and climbing up. Unfortunately when we arrived it had gone, obviously moving inland to more suitable habitat.
We walked around the Oyster Farm lagoons and then inland and saw 630 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 30 Redshank, 1 Little Owl, 12 Mute Swans, 6 Shelduck, 1 Kingfisher, 2 Kestrels, 2 Ringed Plovers, 6 Oystercatchers, 2 Little Egrets, 8 Mallard, 2 Green Woodpeckers, 1 Stonechat, 30 Golden Plovers, 8 Cormorants, 1 Barnacle Goose, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Little Grebe, 2 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall, 16 Tufted Duck and 4 Coot.

Another wonderful morning but no spring migrants yet. We walked along the seawall from Reculver and saw 1 Pied Wagtail, 849 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 10 Mute Swans, 1 Little Owl, 15 Redshank, 8 Shelduck, 1 Barnacle Goose, 7 Cormorants, 6 Oystercatchers, 33 Sanderling, 1 Little Egret, 2 Grey Plovers and 6 Ringed Plovers.
During the afternoon Jonathan Barnard had 1 Common Sandpiper and 1 Snow Bunting and Mark Chidwick saw 2 Short-eared Owls.

On another sunny, spring morning we walked from Chamber's Wall to Coldharbour and counted 2 Kestrels, 15 Mute Swans, 4 Song Thrushes, 39 Redshank, 550 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 10 Mallard, 4 Bearded Tits, 2 Curlew, 50 Carrion Crows, 28 Oystercatchers, 19 Sanderling, 8 Ringed Plovers, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Snipe, 3 Pied Wagtails, 8 Shelduck, 2 Little Egrets, 2 Stonechats, 2 Grey Plovers, 1 Dunlin and 1 Barnacle Goose.

It was a wonderful spring morning as we drove to Chamber's Wall to meet Matt who had walked in from Reculver. The first bird we saw as we arrived at the Chamber's Wall gate was a Raven (115th) taking off from the Marsh and then flying E over Wagtail Farm. We then walked back along the seawall to Reculver and recorded 15 Song Thrushes, 1 Grey Wagtail, 3 Little Egrets, 10 Corn Buntings, 3 Yellowhammers, 8 Mute Swans, 3 Grey Plovers, 4 Bearded Tits, 10 Redshank, 12 Mallard, 1 Grey Heron, 34 Oystercatchers, 3 Great Crested Grebes, 2 Curlew, 620 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 6 Ringed Plovers, 3 Dunlin, 4 Shelduck, 1 Sanderling, 1 Little Owl, 1 Kestrel and 1 Stonechat.
On his way home Matt had 10 Common Buzzards circling over Shuart.
This evening Alex and Julian Perry walked around the Oyster Farm. Birds seen included 900+ Brent Geese, 11 Mute Swans, 7 Shelducks, 2 Mallards, 1 Little Egret, 4 Oystercatchers, 1 Snipe, 15 Redshanks, 1 Little Owl, 1 Short-eared Owl, 10 Meadow Pipits, 16 Corn Buntings and 5 Reed Buntings.
Earlier in the day at Bishopstone there were 2 Comma butterflies and 1 Red Admiral.

An early morning visit to Reculver produced 14 Tufted Duck, 2 Pochard, 6 Gadwall, 6 Mallard, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Little Grebe, 1 Grey Wagtail and 3 Mistle Thrushes.
We then visited Shuart and walked along the railway embankment and recorded 1 Goldcrest, 17 Teal, 3 Marsh Harriers, 1 Green Woodpecker, 2 Common Buzzards, 62 Mute Swans, 1 Chiffchaff singing on the railway embankment, 2 Mallard, 21 Meadow Pipits, 1 Greenfinch, 2 Long-tailed Tits, 2 Ring-necked Parakeets, 6 Linnets and 10 Chaffinches.

We spent the morning ringing out on the Marsh and saw 120 Golden Plovers, 2 Shelduck, 1 Marsh Harrier, 82 Corn Buntings, 15 Tree Sparrows, 9 Yellowhammers, 30 Reed Buntings, 1 Green Woodpecker, 178 Cormorants, 31 Stock Doves, 2 Mallard, 6 Lapwings and 2 Goldfinches.

This afternoon we walked from Chamber's Wall to Coldharbour and back along the Green Wall. We recorded 9 Stonechats, 750 Brent Geese, 2 Common Buzzards, 11 Redshank, 8 Mallard, 58 Cormorants, 4 Ringed Plovers, 5 Turnstone, 10 Shelduck, 2 Mute Swans, 1 Little Egret, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Kestrel and 1 Green Woodpecker.

We recorded 886 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 1 Barnacle Goose, 9 Mute Swans, 2 Stonechats, 1 Pied Wagtail, 7 Turnstone, 1 Little Owl, 14 Redshank, 2 Goldfinches, 1 Sanderling, 16 Oystercatchers, 8 Ringed Plovers, 12 Shelduck, 1 Grey Heron, 2 Little Egrets, 4 Grey Plovers, 45 Golden Plovers, 32 Linnets, 2 Mallard, 1 Kestrel, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Common Buzzard, 12 Tufted Ducks, 4 Gadwall, 2 Pochard and 1 Little Grebe.

We saw 664 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 10 Ringed Plovers, 13 Mute Swans, 19 Redshank, 5 Shelduck, 7Oystercatchers, 1 Grey Plover, 1 Snow Bunting briefly on the seawall, 2 Turnstone, 4 Mallard, 12 Cormorants, 5 Stonechats, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Little Egret and 2 Pied Wagtails.
At Grenham Bay this morning on an incoming tide Terry Wilson counted 120 Brent Geese, 42 Grey Plovers, 50 Sanderlings, 20 Ringed Plovers, 60 Dunlin, 3 Curlews, 4 Turnstones, 20 Common Scoter and 2 Great Crested Grebes.

We saw 548 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 21 Mute Swans, 1 Green Woodpecker, 6 Oystercatchers, 8 Redshank, 9 Mallard, 5 Turnstone, 3 Ringed Plovers, 1 Lapwing, 2 Little Egrets, 2 Little Grebes, 4 Stonechats, 2 Grey Herons, 1 Barnacle Goose, 14 Cormorants, 1 Green Sandpiper, 12 Tufted Duck, 3 Pochard, 1 Great Crested Grebe and 7 Gadwall.

March 1st
March began with sunny but very blustery morning as we walked inland at Reculver and then along the seawall to Coldharbour. We recorded 8 Pochard, 15 Tufted Duck, 1 Shoveler, 6 Mallard, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 1 Grey Heron, 1 Little Egret, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Fieldfares, 620 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 14 Mute Swans, 2 Shelduck, 13 Ringed Plovers, 6 Oystercatchers, 1 Turnstone, 5 Redshank, 1 Stonechat, 1 Barnacle Goose and 1 Pied Wagtail W.
