December 29th
On a sunny and frosty morning we parked one car at Shuart and drove the other to Chamber's Wall and then walked back to Shuart along the seawall. The cold weather seemed to have moved one or two birds towards the coast and we saw a good range of species including 5 Gadwall, 1 Kestrel, 5 Yellowhammers, 41 Fieldfares, 54 Redwings, 76 Mallard, 45 Corn Buntings, 37 Chaffinches, 2 Tree Sparrows, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 13 Mute Swans, 276 Dark-bellied Brent Geese, 53 Golden Plovers, 1 Shelduck, 1 Shoveler, 3 Wigeon, 2 Teal, 1 Peregrine, 3 Common Buzzards, 5 Ring-necked Parakeets, 1 Sparrowhawk, 15 Skylarks, 1 Lapland Bunting, 30 Stock Doves, 2 Little Egrets, 50 Carrion Crows, 96 Oystercatchers, 3 Great Crested Grebes, 4 Curlew, 2 Grey Plovers, 3 Stonechats, 2 Turnstone, 6 Sanderling, 4 Redshank, 1 Marsh Harrier, 1 Green Woodpecker and 1 Goldcrest.
This afternoon we walked along the promenade at Minnis Bay in bright sunshine and immediately saw an immature Long-tailed Duck flying W. Other birds we counted were 29 Sanderling, including one of which showed an array of colour rings whose origin I hope to discover, 21 Ringed Plovers, 323 Oystercatchers returning from their roost, 23 Turnstone, 125 Dunlin, 9 Grey Plover, 1 Great Crested Grebe, 12 Redshank, 1 Little Egret and 1 Pied Wagtail.
